His wife and all three of his sons live in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Abdur Rahman, 65, lived alone at the family home in Chandanaish, Chattogram. On Monday his sons telephoned but could not reach him. That afternoon a daughter-in-law came from her father’s house to check on him and found the door of the house shut. When the door was opened with the help of local people, Abdur Rahman was found dead on his bed, his body already decomposing.

Abdur Rahman, son of Mia Sowdagar of Nagarpara village in Satbaria union of Chandanaish upazila in Chattogram, had himself lived in Dubai. He returned home a year and a half ago and did not go back. He lived alone at the house and cooked for himself. He was last seen at a village tea stall on Friday. His body was recovered on Monday. After the body was recovered with the help of the humanitarian team of the local Gausia Committee, police sent it to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police said it is believed Abdur Rahman died three or four days earlier. His wife, three sons and eldest son’s wife live in Dubai, police said. His wife was injured in an accident and is receiving treatment there.

A former vice-chairman of the Chandanaish upazila parishad, Solaiman Faruqi, said Abdur Rahman largely kept to himself in the area and had little contact with others.

The inspector (investigation) of Chandanaish police station, Riton Mia, said officers reached the scene at about 6pm on Monday and found that the death had occurred several days earlier.

Citing local residents, Riton Mia said Abdur Rahman had tea at a stall beside his house at about dusk on Friday. He was not seen outside after that.

Neighbours said Abdur Rahman’s middle son was married at the family home in Chandanaish in January. Everyone in the family returned to Dubai after the wedding, but Abdur Rahman did not. His middle son’s wife lives at her father’s house in Dohazari and came from there from time to time to see her father-in-law. She came to check on him on Monday and found him dead.

Inspector Riton Mia said the youngest son’s wife told police that the sons in Dubai had repeatedly telephoned their father without reaching him, and that the middle son’s wife came to check on Monday and found her father-in-law’s body. Whether he had suffered a stroke will be known once the post-mortem report is received.
