A young entrepreneur in Joypurhat has found success growing foreign grape varieties on a small plot of family land, drawing daily visitors eager to see the fruit-laden vines.
Abu Hurairah of Uttar Joydebpur village in Panchbibi upazila had planned to go to Italy after finishing his studies. Instead, on the advice of a Bangladeshi expatriate, he decided to try grape farming on his father’s 25-decimal plot.
He planted 60 saplings of five varieties, including Baikonur, Reliance, and Dixon. Within seven months, every plant bore fruit. Red and green grapes now hang from the vines, attracting attention from passersby.
Hurairah has already begun selling grapes locally. While the local agriculture department provided limited assistance, JAKS Foundation, an NGO, offered financial and technical support. Agriculture officer Md. Shahadat Hosen Shahin of the foundation provided guidance on cultivation methods.
Working without hired labor, Hurairah manages the vineyard with the help of his father and brother. He has also begun producing seedlings of foreign grape varieties for sale.
Visitors come daily to see his vineyard, and Hurairah shares his story of choosing entrepreneurship over migration. Local observers said more young people should follow his example rather than pursuing jobs abroad.
