Jamaat calls for successful September 5 Dhaka-Chattogram long march

Jamaat-e-Islami is preparing to carry out the long marches to four metropolitan cities announced by the 11-party alliance over various demands. The “Long March Implementation Committee” held a meeting Monday for this purpose.

The meeting, held Monday at 11 a.m. at Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s central office in Mogbazar, the capital, was chaired by the party’s Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar.

The meeting formed various committees and distributed responsibilities to ensure the long marches proceed peacefully, in an organized manner, and successfully. It also issued an earnest call to grassroots activists and the public in the relevant areas to make the long march program a complete success.

Earlier, on August 6, the 11-party alliance announced four nationwide long marches from a sit-in program held at Muktangan in the capital over 11 demands, including protests against the electricity and gas crisis and rising commodity prices. Under the program, long marches will be held from Dhaka to Chattogram on September 5, from Dhaka to Rangpur on September 19, from Dhaka to Khulna on October 10, and from Dhaka to Sylhet on October 24. Of these, the Chattogram, Rangpur, and Khulna marches will be conducted by road, while the Sylhet march will be conducted by rail. Following the long march programs, a mass rally will be held in Dhaka on November 14.

Those present at the Long March Implementation Committee meeting included Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Mawlana ATM Masum, Mawlana Rafiqul Islam Khan MP, Dr Hamidur Rahman Azad, Mawlana Abdul Halim, and Mawlana Muhammad Shahjahan; central executive council member Saiful Alam Khan Milon MP; Dhaka Metropolitan South Amir Nurul Islam Bulbul MP; Dhaka Metropolitan North Amir Md Selim Uddin; North Secretary Dr Md Rezaul Karim; central working council member and Khulna region representative Mawlana Abul Kalam Azad MP; Sylhet Metropolitan Amir Md Fakhrul Islam; Bogura region Assistant Director Professor Md Nazrul Islam; Bangladesh Labour Welfare Federation President Advocate Atikur Rahman Atik; and Islami Chhatra Shibir Secretary General Sibgatullah Sibga, among others.
