Dhaka:
Measles and suspected measles killed 17 more children in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health Services said, pushing the 71-day death toll to 545.
Sixteen of the deaths were attributed to symptoms consistent with measles, while one was a confirmed measles case, the directorate said in its latest bulletin on Monday. Of the 545 deaths recorded since the outbreak began, 458 were classified as suspected measles and 87 as confirmed.
The figures cover the period from 8 a.m. on May 24 to 8 a.m. on May 25.
Seven of the 17 children who died in the latest 24 hours were from Dhaka division, the directorate said. Three deaths were reported in Sylhet division, two each in Rajshahi, Chattogram and Barishal, and one in Mymensingh.
The directorate said 1,127 new measles cases were detected in the same period, and 1,027 children were admitted to hospitals with symptoms consistent with the disease. Dhaka division accounted for 427 of the admissions, followed by Chattogram (208), Barishal (128) and Khulna (95). Another 1,405 patients were discharged in the past 24 hours.
Bangladesh recorded its first case in the current outbreak on March 15. According to the directorate, the country has logged 64,940 measles cases over the past 71 days. Hospitals have admitted 51,585 patients, while 8,719 cases have been confirmed and 47,619 patients have been discharged.
