The National Citizen Party (NCP) has announced its initial list of 100 candidates for the upcoming local government elections, following the declaration of mayoral candidates in five cities. On Tuesday evening, the party revealed the names of candidates for 100 upazilas and paurashavas at a press conference at its temporary office in Bangla Motor, Dhaka.
Saris Alom, the NCP’s chief organizer for the northern region and chairman of the local government election management committee, stated that candidates have been announced for five of the 13 city corporations. He added that candidates for the remaining city corporations will be announced soon.
With a total of 830 units, including 500 upazilas and 330 paurashavas across the country, the NCP received over a thousand applications for candidacy in the first phase. After scrutiny, the names of 100 candidates were announced initially. Alom further mentioned that in the second phase, another 100 candidates will be announced in May.
He emphasized that the NCP, as a political party, aims to become a representative government of the people by 2036. Therefore, the party is preparing for the elections, whether they are held in isolation or as part of an alliance. He added that the party will not field candidates with links to fascism or those convicted of criminal offenses.
Among the initially announced candidates, Mohammad Habibur Rahman Habib is running for the position of Upazila Chairman in Tetulia, Panchagarh district, Rangpur division. Other notable candidates include Shishir Asad for Bodar Upazila Chairman, Masud Parvej for Debiganj Mayor, Golam Mortuza Selim for Ranishankail Upazila Chairman in Thakurgaon district, Imran Chowdhury for Fulbaria Upazila Chairman in Dinajpur, and Mohammad Abdul Mannan for Ghaghata Mayor.
The press conference was also attended by the party’s spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiya and the head of the Global Data Spores Cell, Alauddin Mohammad, among others.
