Madrasa student missing after bathing in Jadukata river

SUNAMGANJ — A 12-year-old madrasa student is missing after going to bathe in the Jadukata border river in Sunamganj’s Tahirpur upazila, family members said.

The boy, Abu Saeed, disappeared around 3 p.m. Thursday in the Shahidabad area of the Jadukata river, north of the Laurergarh BGB camp in Uttar Badaghat union of Tahirpur upazila.

Other students with Abu Saeed swam to the bank of a hillock, but he sank in the water and went missing.

Abdur Rashid, ward member of Ward 9 of Uttar Badaghat union, confirmed the incident.

The missing student was the son of Rabi Mia of Shahidabad village in Badaghat union of the upazila.

Abu Saeed’s uncle, Shahid Mia, said four or five students of similar age from the Shah Arefin Shahidabad Orphanage and Madrasa went to bathe in the Jadukata river behind the madrasa around midday. They crossed a small canal on the eastern bank at the source of the river and went down to bathe in a canal called Bagher Mukh near Barikkar Tila on the western bank.

The other students managed to swim to the bank, but Abu Saeed sank in the water and disappeared. The other students informed the madrasa and Abu Saeed’s family of his disappearance. Family members and local residents have been searching the river since the afternoon, but he had not yet been recovered.
