Shashthi Chandra Barman, an elderly man rescued from the no-man’s-land a day after being stranded at the Bakshiganj border in Jamalpur, has been handed over to his relatives. The BGB and police handed him to his younger brother, Bhabani Chandra Barman, on behalf of the family on Thursday (11 June) afternoon. Bakshiganj police officer-in-charge (OC) Makbul Hossain and Jamalpur 35 BGB’s Dhanua Kamalpur company commander Billal Hossain were present, along with members of Shashthi Chandra Barman’s family.

Earlier the same day, Shashthi Chandra Barman was rescued from the no-man’s-land at the Ramrampur border in Bakshiganj upazila and taken into Bakshiganj police custody. His brother Bhabani Barman said: “Two months ago my brother Shashthi Chandra Barman (68) went missing from Chandlai village in Godagari, Rajshahi. Despite much searching, he could not be found.”

On Wednesday (10 June) morning, BSF members had tried to force Shashthi Chandra Barman into Bangladesh near pillar 1082 at the Ramrampur border in Bakshiganj upazila, but the push-in attempt failed because of resistance from the BGB and local residents, creating severe tension at the border. After his rescue from the no-man’s-land on Thursday, the BGB handed him to the police, and the elderly man was finally handed to his relatives after the legal process.
