Police have arrested a 17-year-old over the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl in the Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria. He was arrested late on Sunday night (June 21), police said.

According to police and the case statement, the girl was on her way to a nearby house on Saturday at around 7 p.m. when, it is alleged, the teenager carried her off from a deserted road to a nearby jute field and raped her.

The girl returned home about half an hour later. When family members saw her in a distressed and painful state and asked what had happened, she told them about the incident, police said. Relatives took her that night to the Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex, and from there she was admitted at around 1 a.m. to a general hospital in Brahmanbaria for better treatment.

The girl’s father filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Nasirnagar police station. Police carried out an operation immediately after the incident and arrested the accused, who was later sent to jail through the court.

The officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar police station, Mohammad Shahinul Islam, confirmed the incident. ‘As soon as we received news of the incident, police carried out a special operation and arrested the accused,’ he said. ‘He has been shown arrested in the case filed by the victim’s father, and was later sent to jail through the court.’

He added: ‘Along with completing the child’s treatment and medical examination, the necessary legal steps are being taken over the incident.’
