NAOGAON — Police have detained four people, including the father and two sisters of the male head of the household, for questioning in connection with the killing of four members of a single family in Naogaon’s Niamatpur upazila.

The four were detained Tuesday morning and afternoon, police said. They are Namir Uddin, 70, father of victim Habibur Rahman; his sisters Dalima and Halima; and his nephew Sabuj Rana.

The killings took place Monday night in Bahadurpur village of Bahadurpur Union, and police recovered the four bodies on Tuesday morning.

The dead are Habibur Rahman, 36; his wife Poppy Sultana, 25; their son Zakir Hossain, 14, a madrasa student; and their 4-year-old daughter Sadia Islam Mou.

Police and local residents said the victims were sleeping in their home when assailants slit the throats of Rahman and his wife and struck their son and daughter on the head, killing them. An elderly neighbor saw blood at the front door in the morning and entered to find Rahman’s body on a bed with his throat cut, Sultana’s body outside the house, and the children’s bodies in an adjacent room.

Niamatpur police recovered the bodies after being notified, and an investigation is under way. Investigators are looking at a land dispute as a possible motive.

Additional Deputy Inspector General Shahabuddin Ahmed, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Manda Circle) Abdullah Al Mahmud Shaon, and Niamatpur Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman visited the scene.

Sabina Begum, the mother of Poppy Sultana, told reporters her daughter had been mistreated by her in-laws since the marriage. She said a recent dispute among the family over land had escalated into beatings and a court case, and that the killings stemmed from resentment after her son-in-law was awarded 10 bighas of land while his five sisters each received two and a half bighas. “The five sisters together killed my daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren,” she said.

Niamatpur Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman said four bodies had been recovered and four people detained for questioning. “Work is under way to determine the cause of the incident,” he said. “Details will be released after the investigation is complete.”
