A court in Tangail has sentenced a husband to life imprisonment with hard labour for the killing of his wife. He was also fined 50,000 taka, with a further year’s simple imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
Tangail’s senior sessions judge Md Hafizur Rahman delivered the sentence at midday on Monday (September 21).
The convicted man is Mustaq, son of the late Haji Azmat Ali of Baguata village in Gopalpur upazila, Tangail. He is currently at large.
Advocate Md Shafiqul Islam Ripon, public prosecutor at the Tangail sessions court, said the accused Mustaq lived in a rented house in the Ghatandi area of Bhuapur with his two young sons and his wife, Jannatul Ferdous Munia. Mustaq frequently abused his wife Munia over various family matters. At one point, at some time after 8pm on September 14, 2023, he killed Munia and fled.
After a long search, police recovered Munia’s body from under a box bed in the house at around 5pm on September 15. Munia’s brother, Aminul Islam Khan, filed a case at Bhuapur police station over the death.
At the end of the trial the court sentenced the accused Mustaq to life imprisonment with hard labour for the killing of his wife, with a fine of 50,000 taka and a further year’s simple imprisonment if unpaid. It also gave him two years’ imprisonment with hard labour and a fine of 10,000 taka, with two months more if unpaid, for attempting to conceal his wife’s body.
Munia was the daughter of Nurul Islam Khan of Nalin Bazar village in Gopalpur.
Advocate Md Rafiqul Islam Rafiq appeared for the defence in the case.
