GANGNI, Meherpur — Burglars broke into two key offices of the upazila administration in Gangni, Meherpur, in an audacious overnight raid, cutting window grilles to enter and ransacking important documents, police said.
The incident has raised questions about security at government offices. Both the Gangni upazila land office and the sub-registry office were targeted on the same night at roughly the same time.
CCTV footage shows the intruders cutting the iron rods of a window grille and entering the offices around 2:30 a.m. They spent about 20 minutes ransacking the premises and attempting the burglary.
Inside the sub-registry office, the burglars broke open cabinets in several rooms and scattered important files. At the land office, they entered through a broken rear window and ransacked papers in the chief office assistant’s room.
It was not immediately clear whether any important documents or files had been stolen.
Staff arrived for work at the two offices around 9 a.m. Thursday, May 14, and discovered the scene. Police were called, and a team led by Gangni police station’s officer-in-charge Uttam Kumar Das and investigating officer Abdullah Al Mamun visited the site and collected evidence.
Gangni upazila sub-registrar Naima Islam said: “CCTV footage showed that someone cut the window grille, entered and ransacked the files. We are investigating what has been lost.”
Uttam Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Gangni police station, said: “We have visited the scene and collected evidence. We are analyzing the CCTV footage to try to identify those involved.”
The burglaries at two government offices on the same night have caused concern among local residents. Questions have been raised about nighttime security, the presence of night guards and the locking of office rooms. Residents demanded stronger security after such an audacious break-in at important government offices and called for a swift investigation and prosecution of those responsible.
Although officials said an investigation is under way, it remains unclear whether important documents are secure.
