GANGNI, Meherpur — Burglars broke into two important upazila administration offices in Gangni overnight, cutting through window grills, ransacking documents and prompting fresh questions about security at government premises.
The break-ins at the Gangni Upazila Land Office and the Sub-Registry Office took place at nearly the same time on the same night, police said.
CCTV footage showed the intruders cutting through the iron grilles of a window and entering the offices at about 2:30 a.m., spending roughly 20 minutes inside as they searched the premises and tried to remove items.
Inside the Sub-Registry Office, thieves broke open cabinets in several rooms and scattered important files. At the Land Office, they smashed a rear window to enter the chief office assistant’s room and disturbed paperwork there.
It was not immediately clear whether any important documents or files had been stolen. Staff discovered the scene when they arrived at about 9 a.m. Thursday, May 14.
After being informed, a team led by Gangni police station officer-in-charge Uttam Kumar Das and investigating officer Abdullah Al Mamun visited the sites and collected evidence.
Gangni Sub-Registrar Naima Islam said the CCTV footage showed intruders cutting through the grilles and rifling through files. “The extent of the damage is being investigated,” she said.
Das said police had inspected the scenes and collected evidence. “We are analyzing the CCTV footage to identify those involved,” he said.
The break-ins at two important government offices on a single night have raised concerns among residents, particularly about overnight security, the presence of night guards and whether office rooms were locked. Residents have called for stronger security and a swift investigation that brings those responsible to justice. Whether sensitive records remain safe is still unclear, officials said.
