Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has said the government is committed to ensuring no citizen is denied healthcare due to financial constraints. “We are building a welfare state where no one will be deprived of medical care because they cannot afford it. Citizens may not even need to go abroad for treatment,” the prime minister said.
He was speaking on Saturday morning at the inauguration of Building 2 of the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, a 500-bed facility in Dhaka.
“This new building, with modern ICUs, operating theaters, advanced diagnostics and specialized wards, will not only expand patient capacity but also serve as a major milestone for treatment, research and higher education,” he said.
The prime minister emphasized that technology alone does not make a health system effective. He said doctors’ empathetic behavior — listening to patients, understanding their anxieties and offering reassurance — is irreplaceable. He called for mutual trust, respect and empathy among doctors, patients and their families.
Tareque Rahman said the government is introducing e-health cards to build an effective referral system, bringing healthcare closer to people’s homes. He announced that every upazila hospital will be upgraded to 151 beds during the current government’s tenure.
