National Citizen Party-NCP aims to become a representative government party by 2036, says the party’s chief organizer in the northern region, Sarjis Alam. On Tuesday evening at the party’s temporary office in Bangla Motor, Dhaka, he announced the names of 100 upazila and municipal council candidates for the local government elections, expressing this goal.
Sajid Alam said, “In the first phase, candidates have been announced for five out of 13 city corporations. Very soon, candidates for the remaining city corporations will also be announced. Currently, there are a total of 830 units in the country, including 500 upazilas and 330 municipalities. More than a thousand applications were received in the first phase. After scrutiny, the names of 100 people have been announced initially.
In the upcoming May, another 100 candidates will be announced in the second phase, they said, adding that responsible leaders from various factions of the NCP as well as acceptable and clean individuals from other political parties can apply for the party’s nomination. However, those with links to fascism or convicted of heinous crimes will not be given a chance.
Sajis Alam said that as a political party, the NCP dreams of becoming a representative government of the people by 2036. Therefore, the party is preparing for both collective and independent elections, putting an end to uncertainties. At the same time, to strengthen the organizational base at the local level and provide opportunities for preparation of leaders and activists, candidates are being announced for the posts of Upazila Chairman and Pour Mayor.
