Law enforcement surveillance has been stepped up in Gazipur over flash processions, torch processions and other activity by the banned Awami League and its associated organisations. Amid that, the detention of the Awami League leader Amulya Chandra Das in Pubail, and his subsequent release on a written undertaking, has caused discussion in political circles.
A special team of the south division of the Gazipur metropolitan detective branch (DB) raided the Pubail area of Gazipur city on Sunday (September 20) and detained Amulya Chandra Das. He is known as a former presidium member and adviser of Gazipur metropolitan Awami League. Local political sources said he was also a candidate for the presidency of Pubail thana Awami League.
DB sources said Amulya Chandra Das was detained in the course of the investigation of a case. Various information about him was being gathered and checked after the detention. No details were given immediately about which case or what allegation he had been detained over.
Confirming the detention, the acting police commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, Md Taherul Haque Chouhan, said no evidence had been found at a preliminary stage of any sabotage or conspiratorial activity by him. Taking the overall matter into account, he was released on a written undertaking.
The police commissioner also said the member of parliament for the Gazipur-5 (Kaliganj) seat, A K M Fazlul Haque Milon, telephoned at that point to say that Amulya Chandra Das is currently involved in BNP politics and campaigned for the sheaf-of-paddy candidate on his behalf at the last election. MP Milon also referred to him as his own man. According to the police account, however, the main considerations in releasing Amulya Chandra Das were the absence of preliminary evidence of sabotage or conspiracy against him and an assessment of the overall situation.
The deputy police commissioner of the south division of the Gazipur metropolitan DB, Md Saheb Ali Pathan, said the DB had detained Amulya Chandra Das. Various information about him was being gathered and checked.
Reports of flash processions, torch processions and other programmes in the name of the banned Awami League and its associated organisations have come to light in various parts of Gazipur recently. Law enforcement activity has also been strengthened over these incidents. The swift release of this former Awami League leader on a written undertaking, after his detention, has created a good deal of discussion in political circles.
Police say, however, that people are brought within the legal process on the basis of the information and allegations obtained, not on the basis of political identity. In the case of Amulya Chandra Das too, he was released on a written undertaking because a preliminary check found no link to sabotage or conspiratorial activity. The process of verifying the information gathered about him is continuing.
