Prime Minister Tarique Rahman leaves Dhaka for New York on Monday. He will address the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 24.

The foreign secretary, Asad Alam Siam, gave the information at a press conference at the foreign ministry on Sunday.

He said the prime minister would set out in his speech Bangladesh’s new democratic journey, the rule of law and accountability, world peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, economic cooperation, the empowerment of young people and women, education and health, the Rohingya crisis, the just use of modern technology and the reform of the multilateral system.

The foreign secretary said Bangladesh’s participation in this session carries particular importance in several respects. First, it is the present government’s first participation on the United Nations’ highest global platform. That creates an opportunity to set out the new government’s political commitments and its outline for the Bangladesh of the future before the world.

He added: “Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will represent Bangladesh at the United Nations General Assembly for the first time. And Bangladesh’s foreign minister will serve as president at the same session. So this is on one hand a rare and historic moment for us, and on the other a matter of special standing and pride.”

On the margins of the session, the prime minister will hold important meetings with heads of state and government of various countries and senior officials of international organisations. The foreign secretary said those meetings would create new opportunities to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation.

The prime minister is due to leave for home on the night of September 25 after completing the programme in New York.
