17 Jamaat-backed law officers resign at Sylhet court

Seventeen law officers backed by Jamaat, serving as additional public prosecutors (additional PPs), additional government pleaders (additional GPs) and assistant public prosecutors (APPs) at the Sylhet District and Sessions Judge’s Court, have resigned together.

On Wednesday (15 July) afternoon, they jointly submitted their resignation letters to Sylhet Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Abdullah Al Mamun, for onward transmission to the secretary of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

Advocate Md Abdul Khalique, organising secretary of the Bangladesh Lawyers Council, Sylhet, confirmed this to the daily Naya Diganta on Wednesday afternoon. He said they had voluntarily resigned from their posts in protest at the present government’s reluctance over a referendum, constitutional reform and implementation of the July Charter, and at the abolition of a separate secretariat for the judiciary.

Those who resigned include Additional Public Prosecutor (additional PP) Advocate Md Alim Uddin and Additional Government Pleader (additional GP) Advocate Mohammad Nazmul Huda.

The 15 who resigned from assistant public prosecutor (APP) posts are Advocate Md Rabiul Islam, Advocate Juned Ahmed, Advocate Md Mozammil Ali, Advocate Md Rahmat Ali, Advocate Yasin Khan, Advocate Mohammad Nazmul Islam, Advocate Saleh Ahmed, Advocate Aminul Islam Chowdhury, Advocate Kazi Atiful Haque, Advocate Sadek Ahmed, Advocate Mohammad Moynul Islam, Advocate Md Abdul Gaffar, Advocate Afzal Miya Talukder, Advocate Khairul Alam and Advocate Mostafizur Rahman.

It has been learned that they submitted their resignation letters voluntarily. In their separate applications, those resigning said they had long carried out their duties with dedication, honesty and sincerity, but were voluntarily resigning from their posts in protest at the present government’s reluctance over a referendum, constitutional reform and implementation of the July Charter, and at the abolition of a separate secretariat for the judiciary. They also expressed their resolve to continue playing a responsible role, as lawyers, in the country’s law and justice system in future.
