A court has sentenced two people to life imprisonment in a murder case in Mathbaria, Pirojpur, and fined each Tk 10,000, with a further six months in jail if the fine is not paid.
The convicts are Md Kamrul Akan, son of Md Yunus Akan of Ghopkhali village in Mathbaria upazila, and Md Sohag Howlader, son of Md Tuku Miya Howlader of Charkakhali village.
The court acquitted another accused in the case, Md Yusuf Akan.
Pirojpur Senior District and Sessions Judge Md Mojibur Rahman delivered the verdict on Wednesday. The convicts were absconding at the time it was announced.
According to court sources, on the afternoon of 17 May 2015, the accused Kamrul, Sohag and Yusuf, along with two or three others, hacked Rakibul — son of Md Halim Kazi of the Mathbaria municipal area — to death with sharp weapons at Betmor Bazar over a prior enmity.
The victim’s father filed a murder case at Mathbaria Police Station that day against Kamrul Akan, Sohag Howlader and Yusuf Akan, along with two or three unnamed people. Police later filed a charge sheet against them, and on the evidence the court found Kamrul Akan and Sohag guilty and handed down the sentence.
Public prosecutor Abul Kalam Akan appeared for the state, and Advocate Ahsanul Kabir Badal for the defence.
