If a satisfactory reply is not received to the show-cause notice over the deaths of six newborns, action will be taken against Ad-din Hospital under the law, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has said. “By Sunday afternoon, Ad-din Hospital must answer the show-cause notice as to why its licence should not be cancelled. If a satisfactory answer is not received, action will be taken under the law,” he said. The minister spoke at a press conference at his residence on the capital’s Minto Road on Saturday (6 June).

Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain said a show-cause notice on cancelling the hospital’s licence had been issued over the six newborn deaths, with the authorities asked to reply by Sunday afternoon. On the question of public interest and people’s safety, the law would be enforced, he said, and if the reply was not satisfactory, the maximum action would be taken under the prevailing law. A criminal case has been filed over the incident, and necessary action would be taken based on what the investigation finds.

Saying the government is launching an ambulance service to bring healthcare to people’s doorsteps, the minister said: “The government is working to ensure doorstep ambulance service. Detailed discussion and decisions were taken for this under the prime minister’s chairmanship. If this succeeds, it will fill the country’s ambulance shortage and save a huge amount of foreign currency.” He said the service is planned in three tiers — with three separately designed types of ambulance to carry patients from village to upazila, upazila to district, and district to capital. The locally produced electric ambulances would carry necessary medical equipment, oxygen support and modern emergency-service facilities, with technical and design help from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and the project would initially start with one upazila as a model. He also said awareness rallies against dengue had been held across the country and that medicines for treating patients were ready.
