A BNP member of parliament, Golam Mohammad (GM) Siraj, has called on the Indian government to rein in the West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. ‘Honourable Speaker, through you I am calling on the Modi government, and at the same time I respectfully want to say, please stop our West Bengal’s chief minister, Suvendu Babu,’ he said. ‘The various anti-Bangladesh statements that come from time to time, the statements he is making, have become an obstacle to India-Bangladesh friendship.’

He made the request on Monday while taking part in a discussion on the proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the National Parliament.

GM Siraj said: ‘I would say that Sheikh Hasina is irrelevant here. We have no headache over Sheikh Hasina. She has ceased to exist in Bangladesh; she is out of sight, and she will never, in Bangladesh…’

‘We all want to maintain India-Bangladesh friendship in a respectful way,’ GM Siraj said, ‘because I believe India is our neighbour. The friendship of two friends can be short-lived, and the relationship of a husband and wife can be short-lived too; a husband and wife can divorce. But India and Bangladesh are neighbours, and this neighbourly relationship cannot be divorced. We can never deny a neighbour, neither can India nor can Bangladesh.’

GM Siraj said India’s new high commissioner, Trivedi, had come and said, ‘We are under the same sky and the same air.’

Noting that a storm of debate had been created on social media, GM Siraj said: ‘We want to say, come, win people’s hearts. Let us build a relationship of the heart with the people of India and Bangladesh. We do not want either anti-India or anti-Bangladesh sentiment. We want to remain at peace. In that regard, my respectful request to the present government of India is, please stop the push-in.’

Alongside the push-in, GM Siraj also demanded the closure of drug-manufacturing factories along the Indian border.
