At a members’ (rukon) conference of Jamaat-e-Islami in Rajshahi, National Parliament Leader of the Opposition and party Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said the prime minister can travel anywhere in the world, and there is no problem with a visit to India either. However, he said, any such visit must be grounded in equality, dignity and friendship. He said the country’s people will no longer accept anyone’s dominance.

He made the comments as chief guest at a members’ (rukon) conference organized by Rajshahi Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami, held at Rajshahi District Council auditorium on Friday afternoon.

Shafiqur Rahman said Prime Minister Tareque Rahman is simultaneously head of government and head of his party. If he wants, he can crack down hard on the extortion, corruption and bribery currently under way in the country. If he wants, these things will stop. Whether he wants to, he said, is the real question.

Addressing Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists, Shafiqur Rahman said Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is known to the people of this country as an ideological organization. To earn people’s trust, he said, the organization has long worked among the people to spread the message of Islam and to build an ideal society and state.

With local elections ahead, the Jamaat Amir instructed party leaders and activists to stand by ordinary people and work to secure their right to vote. He said leaders and activists must play a vocal role to ensure no one can snatch away people’s votes.

The conference was chaired by Rajshahi Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami Amir and MP Dr. Maulana Keramat Ali. Moderated by Secretary Imaz Uddin Mondal, the special guest was Central Deputy Amir Professor Mujibur Rahman, MP.

Also speaking were Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan, MP; Dhaka Metropolitan South Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Nurul Islam Bulbul, MP; Assistant Regional Director Professor Rafiqul Islam; Central Working Council member Principal Nazrul Islam; and Rajshahi District Jamaat Amir Professor Abdul Khaleq.
