An elderly woman named Rehana Begum Lily, 70, has been beaten to death in Kishoreganj’s Bhairab after she objected when a bicycle wheel ran over her foot while she was sweeping the yard of the house, it is alleged. The incident took place yesterday, Friday afternoon, in the Jagannathpur South Para area of the municipal town.

Rehana Begum Lily was a tenant at Haji Dhan Mia’s house in the Gainhati area of Jagannathpur South Para. Her husband was the late Surat Ali Mia.

The accused are a man and his wife, residents of the Anu Molla house in the same area.

According to police and local sources, Rehana Begum was sweeping the yard of the house yesterday afternoon. At that time the neighbouring man’s son, riding his bicycle in the yard, ran the wheel over the elderly woman’s foot several times. She scolded the child over this. An argument then began between the two sides. At one point, it is alleged, the man and his wife came into the house and beat Rehana Begum indiscriminately with a bamboo stick. She was seriously injured. Family members later took her to a local hospital, where the doctor on duty declared her dead.

The dead woman’s eldest daughter said: “My mother was sweeping the yard in front of the house. The neighbour’s son ran his bicycle wheel into my mother’s foot. Over that small incident, they came into our house and beat my mother to death. I want a proper trial in this case and the maximum punishment for those involved.”

Confirming the incident, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhairab police station, Limon Bose, said: “On being informed, police went and recovered the body and prepared an inquest report. The body was sent this morning to the morgue of Kishoreganj Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem. Legal action will be taken once a written complaint is received from the victim’s family.”
