DHAKA — Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon said the education system must be modernized to drive progress in the sector.

“Development of the education sector is essential to ensure national development. There is no alternative. The current government has given the highest priority to education,” he said.

The minister, who also holds the primary and mass education portfolio, made the remarks Saturday morning as chief guest at the “China-Bangladesh Education Cooperation Forum 2026” held at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka. The event was jointly organized by the Chinese Embassy and the China-Bangladesh Education and Cultural Exchange Association.

He said the government has adopted a plan to gradually allocate 5 percent of GDP to education. Steps are also being taken to revise syllabuses, curriculum and the academic calendar to improve education quality.

“To improve the quality of education, we must improve the quality of teachers. For that, we have taken an initiative for joint training of general and technical teachers with China. We want to further strengthen the bridge between Bangladesh and China, and the main material of that bridge will be education,” he said.

“Students are the future. So they must be groomed as worthy leaders of the country,” he said.

Multiple memoranda of understanding were signed at the forum between Bangladeshi and Chinese institutions for cooperation in education. After the event, the guests inaugurated an education and technology exhibition and toured the stalls.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen chaired the event. Special guests included the prime minister’s education adviser Mahdi Amin, Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Abdul Khalek, University Grants Commission Chairman Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Vice-Chancellor Dr. A.B.M. Badruzzaman, and Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education Director General Professor Dr. Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel.
