President Md Sahabuddin has resigned. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will speak on receiving the president’s resignation letter at a briefing at the Sangsad Bhaban at 5 p.m. on Friday.
The information was confirmed by sources in the parliament secretariat. Protocol for an acting president has already been prepared in parliament.
Md Sahabuddin, 75, took office as the country’s 22nd president on April 24, 2023, during the Awami League government. Under constitutional rules his term was to run until April 2028.
Speculation about President Sahabuddin’s resignation had been circulating for two days, though the government did not confirm it directly. Amid this, Speaker Hafiz Uddin had gone to Thailand for treatment. He returned home around midday on Friday, two days ahead of his scheduled trip.
