DHAKA — The appointment of a security guard at Dhaka University’s Curzon Hall as joint general secretary of Chhatra Dal’s Dhaka city east branch has sparked internal criticism. The committee member, Julhas Mia, has himself said he is not fully sure about the appointment.
On April 4, Chhatra Dal central President Rakibul Islam and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir issued a notice approving the full committee of the Dhaka city east branch. On May 2, Julhas Mia’s name was listed as joint general secretary in the published list on the organization’s official Facebook page.
Inquiries revealed that Julhas Mia currently works as a security guard at the main gate of Curzon Hall at Dhaka University. He serves as a class-IV employee of the university.
Julhas Mia said he had been associated with Chhatra Dal politics since childhood. He said he wanted an “honorary” position because of his long association with the organization. To that end, he submitted his CV to Mo. Akhter Hossain, vice-president of the city east branch, about six months ago.
He said, however, that he is still not sure whether the person on the committee is himself. For that reason, he has not made any Facebook post, he said.
Asked how he received a post despite not being a student, he said, “I gave my CV to Akhter bhai about one and a half years ago. How my name later came on the committee, I am not sure. It may be, it may not be.”
Mo. Sohag Bhuiyan, president of Dhaka city east Chhatra Dal, confirmed Julhas’s identity. “He is Julhas. He has joined various programs with us. Vice-president Akhter told us he is a running student,” he said.
Vice-President Mo. Akhter Hossain said he was not aware of Julhas’s professional identity. “I only accepted the CV. I did not know he was a security guard,” he said.
City east General Secretary Mo. Hannan Majumder said the same.
“We did not know about his security guard identity. Although enrollment as a student is no longer mandatory, an academic certificate is required. He submitted documents from a private university to us,” he said.
Chhatra Dal central General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said, “This is not how the committee is supposed to be. Send us the list, we will look into it and comment later.”
