A court in Mymensingh has sentenced two young men to life imprisonment with hard labour for raping a class six schoolgirl. Each was also fined Tk 1 lakh, in default of which they will serve a further three months in prison.
Judge MLB Mesbah Uddin Ahmed (senior district and sessions judge) of the Mymensingh Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Wednesday afternoon (September 30).
The convicts are Md Maruf, 21, and Swadhin, 20, of the Mymensingh Kotwali police station area.
According to the case statement and records, the girl’s mother left home for work on the morning of August 12, 2020. At around 3pm that day, Maruf and Swadhin entered the house and raped the girl in turn, the case alleged.
The girl’s mother learned of it when she came home in the evening and filed a case at Mymensingh Kotwali Model police station. After the case was pending in court for a long time, the verdict was delivered on Wednesday once evidence had been taken and the legal process completed.
“The charges against the accused were proved beyond doubt through evidence and the legal process, which is why the court sentenced them to life imprisonment. The prosecution is satisfied with the verdict, which ends a long judicial process,” said public prosecutor Advocate Bazlul Karim Chowdhury.
