Authorities in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, have sealed a private school after a video showing Hindu students dancing in burqas at an Indian Independence Day event went viral on social media. Officials confirmed the development on Wednesday.
The school, located in Ausani Buzurg village in the Bawanjot area, was inspected by the primary education department soon after the video began circulating. During the inspection, officials found that the institution was operating without any government permission or recognition.
District Basic Education Officer (BSA) Amit Kumar Singh said that after the video came to his attention, he directed Block Education Officer (BEO) Riyaz Ahmed to inspect the matter. According to Riyaz Ahmed, the education department had already ordered the school authorities to halt operations roughly a week earlier. But the school continued operating in defiance of that order.
After confirming during the inspection that the school was operating without authorization, authorities locked the manager’s and principal’s offices and sealed the main gate, completely shutting down the school’s activities.
Riyaz Ahmed said a report detailing the inspection and the sealing had been submitted to the district basic education officer.
Officials said alternative arrangements would be made so that the sealed school’s registered students could continue their education. Amit Kumar Singh has directed that the affected students be enrolled in nearby government or other authorized schools.
The move came after a video of the August 15 Independence Day celebration spread widely on social media. While the question of why the students performed in burqas sparked discussion, authorities said the administrative action was primarily driven by the school’s lack of the required government permission or recognition.
Officials said further details about the video and the context behind the event are expected to emerge as the matter is investigated.
