Officials are considering pushing back the 2027 SSC and equivalent exams by two months. Ministry officials say the education department is reconsidering its initial plan to begin the exams on January 7 next year.
Fresh discussions are under way about starting the exams in March instead, taking into account the timing of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr, as well as parents’ views.
According to conversations with relevant education officials, once everything is finalized, the exams could begin in mid-March. A senior education department official said that alongside considering Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr, parents’ opinions are also being given weight.
After reviewing these factors, discussions are under way about holding the SSC and equivalent exams in March. There is therefore a possibility the exams will begin next March.
Ramadan is expected to begin in the second week of February next year. Based on that, discussions are under way about starting the SSC and equivalent exams in mid-March, after Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr conclude. However, no final decision has been made on this yet.
The Education Ministry had earlier announced that the 2027 SSC and equivalent exams would begin on January 7 and end on February 6, 2027. Meanwhile, the 2027 HSC and equivalent exams are set to begin on June 6, 2027, and continue through July 13, 2027.
At a press conference on May 14, the education minister said the decision was made for the roughly 4 million SSC, HSC, and equivalent students, to close the two-year gap that had built up. December, the minister said, would be treated as the end of the academic year and exam month.
For a long time, the SSC exam was held in early February and the HSC exam in early April. But after the Covid-19 pandemic, that schedule could no longer be maintained, and exams have since been pushed back further. Even this year (2026), the SSC exam began on April 21. The HSC and equivalent exams began in July.
Given this situation, the education department took the initiative to move next year’s exams earlier. It had earlier announced plans to hold the 2027 SSC and HSC exams in December, which drew reactions from various quarters.
Later, at a stakeholder meeting, opinion favored not holding the exams in December. Plans were then made to hold next year’s SSC exam in January and the HSC exam in June.
Officials say the ministry will conduct further review before announcing a final decision on which month the exams will ultimately be held.
