Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is returning 10% of his monthly salary to the government treasury for the welfare of the poor, following a practice established by his father, BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain said.
The health minister disclosed this at an event organized by the Bangladesh Midwifery Society in Dhaka on Monday, where he was the chief guest. He said the prime minister has also urged cabinet members to consider donating a portion of their salaries to the government treasury.
Recounting a cabinet meeting the previous day, the health minister quoted the prime minister as saying: “My father used to return 10% of his salary to the government treasury every month, to help the poor or for government needs. I am doing the same. My basic salary is Tk 1,15,000 — I deposit Tk 11,500 each month. When the salary arrives in my account, I write a check to the government’s account.”
“I request you — if you don’t mind, and if it is possible for you — to return 10% of your salaries to the government treasury as well,” the prime minister told cabinet members, according to the health minister.
The health minister said all cabinet members responded positively. “We all said Alhamdulillah. We were pleased that he approached us with this,” he said.
