A court has granted three days’ remand for Beauty Akter, the girlfriend arrested on a charge of killing the rail officer Mamun Mia. Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Juwel Rana passed the order today, Sunday, after a hearing.
The accused was produced in court from jail that day. The remand hearing began in her presence. There was no lawyer for the defence.
On 14 July the investigating officer in the case, sub-inspector Tarek Hasan of Banani police station, applied for 10 days’ remand. The court had set 26 July for a hearing in the accused’s presence.
According to the case statement, Mamun and Beauty were introduced a year ago through Beauty’s sister-in-law. They later became involved in a romantic relationship and met frequently. Mamun’s family did not know about it. On Friday, Beauty came to Dhaka saying she was seeking treatment, and rented a room in the TB Gate area of Mohakhali. She asked Mamun to come there to meet her.
At about 11 a.m. on 11 July, Mamun went there. Beauty pressed him to marry her. An argument developed between them over the matter.
At one point, at about 1:30 p.m., Beauty wounded Mamun with a fruit knife, striking him in the genitals and also stabbing him in the abdomen, the case statement says. At Mamun’s cries, people nearby rescued him and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He died there at about 7 p.m. while undergoing treatment.
The dead man’s uncle, Md Shamsher Ali, filed the case as complainant. After her arrest in the case, Beauty was sent to jail through the court on 12 July.
