One killed as van drives into Berlin Pride crowd

Police have identified a suspect over the vehicle incident at the annual Pride parade in the German capital, Berlin. An extensive search is under way to arrest him.

According to police, a van drove into the crowd during the annual Pride gathering held in Berlin. One person was killed and at least 16 were injured. Several of the injured are said to be in a critical condition.

A police spokesman, Florian Nath, told the news outlet ABC News that although the suspect had been identified, it had not yet been possible to detain him. Operations to find him are continuing.

He also said it was not yet certain what the suspect’s full role at the scene had been. These matters are being examined through the investigation. Police have asked the public not to approach him and to inform law-enforcement agencies quickly if they have any information.

Police said the incident took place at about 10 p.m. local time on Ahornsteig road in Tiergarten park. Immediately afterwards, people were told to avoid the area in the interest of safety, and the scheduled Pride parade was cancelled.
