Dhaka: Children learn from their surroundings at all times, and a parent’s behavior shapes them more than anything else. They pick up many habits simply by watching adults, so families with young children need to be especially careful. Adults should not do anything in front of children that could plant a wrong idea in their minds.
Here are a few habits that parents should avoid, especially when children are around.
Do not compare children with others
Every child is different in thought, learning style and pace. Comparing a child with others is harmful: it lowers self-confidence and creates pressure. Let children grow at their own pace, and celebrate their individuality.
Do not teach children to suppress emotions
Children often try to express pain or anger, but adults sometimes stop them. Phrases like “don’t say such things” or “don’t be so emotional” build mental barriers. Over time, children lose the courage to share their feelings. Instead, parents should listen carefully and try to understand a child’s emotions.
Do not overbook a child’s day
Children today are kept busy with schoolwork, coaching, classes and projects. But they also need play, rest and time alone. A child kept running from one task to another all day will become mentally exhausted. A balanced routine is essential.
The environment around a child plays a major role in development. Children learn from how adults behave. The real responsibility of a parent is to act with awareness and to raise children with understanding and love.
