DHAKA — The interim government is misleading the public with pledges to honor the July Charter in letter and spirit and is, in practice, returning to old-style fascism, a senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader said Friday.
Md. Nurul Islam Bulbul, a member of Jamaat-e-Islami’s central executive council and the party’s amir for Dhaka Metropolitan South, said the public wants reform and change but the government is moving in the opposite direction.
“The people want reform, the people want change, but instead of carrying out reform and change, the government is walking the path of reestablishing the old fascism,” Bulbul said.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a Jamaat-e-Islami education camp for non-rukon associates and members of the Motijheel-Shahjahanpur zone, held Friday afternoon.
Bulbul said those who urged voters to back the referendum before the election and then refused to accept the public verdict once in office cannot be trusted to reform the state or to implement the July Charter.
“If the government truly intended to honor the July Charter in letter and spirit, why did its own members of parliament refuse to accept the referendum result and take the oath for the constitutional reform council?” he said. “The government is not accepting the referendum verdict precisely because it does not intend to implement the July Charter on the basis of the people’s will.”
He urged the government to implement the charter without provoking conflict, and said Jamaat-e-Islami was ready to extend full cooperation if the government accepted the referendum result and acted on the charter.
The session was chaired by Muhammad Shamsur Rahman, assistant secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka Metropolitan South unit and director of the Motijheel-Shahjahanpur zone, and conducted by Muhammad Shariful Islam, amir of Shahjahanpur East thana. Leaders at various levels also spoke at the metropolitan hall venue.
