Dhaka: Eid ul-Adha is the glorified festival of sacrifice, devotion and piety. One of the most important acts of worship during Eid ul-Adha is Qurbani. Qurbani is not merely the slaughter of an animal; it embodies unconditional love for Allah, the spirit of self-sacrifice and the memory of the unique sacrifice and devotion of Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his son Ismail (peace be upon him).
In the Holy Quran, the Almighty Allah declares: “So pray to your Lord and sacrifice.” (Surah Al-Kawthar, verse 2)
This makes clear that the main purpose of Qurbani is sincerity and gaining the pleasure of Allah.
The importance of Qurbani is also highlighted in the Hadith. Narrated by the companion Abu Hurayra: the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever has the means and does not offer the sacrifice, let him not come near our place of prayer.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2123)
Another Hadith states: “Among the deeds of the son of Adam on the day of sacrifice, the dearest to Allah is the offering of Qurbani.” (Tirmidhi)
From an Islamic perspective, Qurbani is an important financial act of worship that is obligatory on every adult, sane and resident Muslim man and woman who meets certain conditions. Capable here means a person who owns nisab-level assets.
How much wealth makes nisab
Any adult, sane and resident Muslim man or woman who owns more than the nisab in assets beyond their basic needs, from dawn on the 10th of Zilhajj to sunset on the 12th of Zilhajj, must offer Qurbani.
Nisab is 7.5 bhori of gold; 52.5 bhori of silver; or wealth equivalent in value to 52.5 bhori of silver in other forms.
If gold or silver alone does not reach the nisab, then a combination of gold and silver — or the value of these along with surplus assets above one’s needs — that equals the value of 52.5 bhori of silver also makes Qurbani obligatory.
Gold and silver ornaments, cash, land beyond one’s residential needs, and surplus household goods all count toward the nisab for Qurbani. This ruling is mentioned in the authoritative jurisprudence book Al-Muhitul Burhani.
Simply put, whoever is obligated to pay zakat is also obligated to offer Qurbani. Unlike zakat, however, the condition of one year passing (hawl) does not apply here; if a person owns nisab-level wealth on the days of Qurbani, Qurbani becomes obligatory.
