37,792 Bangladeshi pilgrims arrive in Saudi Arabia for Hajj

DHAKA — A total of 37,792 Bangladeshi pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia on 94 flights to perform this year’s Hajj, the Bangladesh Hajj Office said Tuesday. Bangladesh has authorized 78,500 people in all to perform the pilgrimage this year.

Md. Lokman Hossain, director of the Bangladesh Hajj Office, said 94 flights had operated from Bangladesh to Jeddah as of 10 a.m. Tuesday.

He said 30 lead agencies and 630 coordinating agencies, for a total of 660, are managing this year’s Hajj operations.

By airline, Biman Bangladesh Airlines carried 16,869 pilgrims on 41 flights, Saudia Airlines carried 13,681 on 35 flights, and Flynas carried 7,142 on 18 flights, the office said.

The remaining 40,505 Bangladeshi pilgrims will travel to Saudi Arabia in stages on scheduled airlines, the director said.

The Hajj Office said 4,565 pilgrims will travel under government arrangements this year and 73,935 under private arrangements.

The Saudi Embassy in Dhaka had issued 78,297 visas as of Thursday, including 4,419 under government arrangements and 73,878 under private arrangements. This year’s Hajj is expected to be held May 26, subject to the sighting of the moon.
