Nizam Uddin Munshi of Ghosh village in Bhanga upazila, Faridpur, has become self-sufficient through papaya cultivation, setting an example for local farmers.
He planted 1,000 Rajshahi-variety papaya saplings on 90 decimals of land and has already sold more than Tk 1 lakh worth of papaya. His garden still has abundant fruit, and he expects even better earnings ahead.
Nizam Uddin said he initially planted the Lal Teer ‘Babu’ variety but suffered losses because it was unsuited to local weather conditions. On the advice of agricultural entrepreneur Dr Babul from Shibchar upazila in Madaripur, he switched to the Rajshahi variety, which thrived and yielded well.
“I have sold over Tk 1 lakh worth of papaya so far. There is still plenty on the trees. I want to expand cultivation in the future. With support from the agriculture department, I could increase seedling production and contribute to meeting the country’s vegetable demand,” he said.
Bhanga upazila agriculture officer Molla Al-Mamun said: “We were not aware of this. The farmer never contacted the agriculture office. We have now learned of it through media reports and will inspect his garden soon to provide technical support.”
