Pope Leo XIV has called for regulation of artificial intelligence. By doing so, he is effectively acting as a Chinese Communist agent, US billionaire Peter Thiel claimed. Thiel made the remarks while speaking at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado.
Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, argued that any call to slow down or regulate AI development in the West effectively serves China’s interests by allowing Beijing to gain a technological edge. He said the Pope’s stance on AI regulation aligns with what China would want — the West hamstringing its own AI capabilities.
At the same event, Thiel made predictions about the 2028 US presidential election and claimed that democratic socialists are gaining dominance within the Democratic Party.
Asked about naming his surveillance company Palantir after the “seeing stones” in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings — objects that critics say ultimately corrupt their users — Thiel pushed back. “In the end, the good characters use the Palantir. Aragorn uses it to confront Sauron, and Sauron is ultimately defeated. Anyone who says otherwise simply doesn’t understand the literature,” he said.
