MP Ferdousi Mishti resigns over Radda health centre attack

Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti, a BNP member of parliament in a reserved women’s seat, has resigned over the attack, looting and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP health centre in Mirpur in the capital.

She submitted her resignation letter to Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Thursday afternoon. “I came to see the Speaker. I will accept whatever decision the party takes,” she told journalists afterwards. Earlier, Prime Minister and BNP chairman Tarique Rahman had ordered her to resign.

Calls for her resignation emerged after the Radda MCH-FP centre (a maternal and child health centre) at Mirpur-1 was demolished following the attack on Thursday (September 24). The centre was attacked, vandalised and looted around midnight that day, and leaders and activists of the ruling party at various levels were accused of involvement.

Mishti’s past political activities have also been controversial, with allegations of extortion, terrorism and land grabbing against her from her time as a ward councillor.

Some local BNP figures are reported to be involved in the Samamana Dokandar Samabay Samity Limited, a traders’ cooperative that came under scrutiny after the Radda centre was demolished. Mishti was president of the cooperative in 2006, when she was commissioner of ward 8 under Shah Ali police station, and signed as president an application to the National Housing Authority to allocate the Radda centre’s land to the cooperative.
