Retired Israeli general Yitzhak Brik has warned that Israeli society has reached the brink of a deep crisis from which it is becoming increasingly difficult to pull back.
He said Israeli society is losing its capacity to understand the reality of its own situation, and that political polarization and narrow partisan interests are making people increasingly intolerant of one another.
According to Iranian media, citing an article published in the Israeli newspaper Maariv, Brik wrote that Israel has become a conflict-ridden society in which different factions prioritize their own narrow interests above all else, allowing many flawed decisions and actions to be justified in the name of one faction’s interests or another’s.
Brik said that anyone who criticizes such actions is attacked based on their perceived political affiliation. He said that after he criticized the country’s recent army chiefs, saying their leadership had pushed the military “toward the abyss,” a section of the political left branded him a right-wing supporter of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
At the same time, he said, he has been labeled a leftist by the right for criticizing Netanyahu and other political leaders over the current state of affairs, while criticism of the Haredi community has drawn insults branding him “not a real Jew” from that community.
The retired general said narrow factional interests are now being prioritized in Israel above the country’s overall security, and that divisions among different segments of society have become so severe that people are no longer holding back from causing each other serious harm.
Brik warned that if this internal division and mutual conflict continue, the stability of Israeli society will weaken further and the risk of the country’s collapse will keep growing.
