India’s capital, Delhi, has been thrown into disarray by heavy rain, prompting authorities to issue a red alert over fears the situation could worsen. Continuous rainfall since early Monday has caused waterlogging in various parts of the city. Conditions became severe enough that 15 flights were diverted to alternate airports after being unable to land at Delhi airport.

More than 250 flights also failed to land in Delhi on schedule because of standing water on the runways, while several flights faced delayed takeoffs, adding to the ordeal for air passengers.

Heavy rain also caused severe traffic congestion on roads across the capital. Traffic came to a near standstill on MB Road near Sangam Vihar due to waterlogging, while vehicles moved at a crawl on roads leading to the airport and in the Saket Court area.

Delhi experienced humid, uncomfortable weather Sunday before rain began early Monday. By 11:30 a.m., rainfall of 18 to 28 millimeters had been recorded across various parts of the capital, with the highest rainfall recorded in Delhi’s Chhatarpur area.

The India Meteorological Department issued the red alert over fears of worsening conditions, forecasting moderate to heavy rain across the capital throughout Monday, along with the possibility of thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Neighboring Gurugram and Faridabad have been placed under an orange alert.
