Multiple members of the British Parliament have demanded sanctions against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the country’s justice minister, Yariv Levin, citing allegations of abuse and human rights violations against Palestinian civilians.
According to a Middle East Eye report, 71 British MPs and members of the House of Lords from various political parties made the demand in a letter sent to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper last week.
The letter states that the Israeli government, including Prime Minister Netanyahu, bears responsibility for “systematic and documented abuse” of Palestinian civilians.
Led by Labour MP Neil Duncan-Jordan, the letter was signed by lawmakers from various parties, including 30 MPs and seven Lords from the ruling Labour Party.
British lawmakers urged the foreign secretary to take steps to “end the impunity” by imposing sanctions on Netanyahu, the deputy prime minister, and Justice Minister Yariv Levin.
The letter also noted that last year’s decision to impose British sanctions on two far-right Israeli ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, had been welcomed. However, it said this had not brought about any real change in the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinian prisoners — rather, the situation has worsened further, creating “near-total impunity.”
The letter also cited a UN report from February, which found allegations of torture, forced displacement, mass killings, destruction of means of subsistence, and collective punishment through deprivation against Palestinian men, women and children.
