NILPHAMARI — The government’s internal boro paddy procurement drive has been launched in Nilphamari. Nilphamari-2 (Sadar) lawmaker Advocate Alfaruk Abdul Latif inaugurated the programme.
The procurement drive opened on Monday afternoon (June 1) at the Nilphamari Sadar food warehouse.
District Food Controller Syed Atiqul Haque, Upazila Food Controller Sohel Rana, Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Atik Ahmed, district Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary Professor Anwarul Islam, Jamaat leader Mohammad Suja and Sadar food warehouse officer-in-charge Mahmuduzzaman were among those present.
On the opening day, three tonnes of paddy were bought from a farmer named Abdur Rahman of Tupamari union in Sadar upazila, who was handed a cheque for the value of the paddy on the spot.
Upazila Food Controller Sohel Rana said 2,400 tonnes of boro paddy would be procured from farmers in Sadar upazila during the current boro season. From among the growers who applied through the Krishok (Farmer) App, 845 were selected by lottery. Each farmer selected in the lottery may sell up to three tonnes of paddy to the government food warehouse.
In addition, 14,071 tonnes of parboiled rice and 771 tonnes of sun-dried (atap) rice would be procured from mill owners this season, he said.
