22 killed, including 17 soldiers, in Niger bus crash

At least 22 people, including 17 soldiers, have been killed in a head-on collision between two buses in Niger. The country’s transport ministry said 37 others were injured, according to the news agency AFP.

A ministry statement said the tragic accident happened about 50 kilometres from the town of Madaoua. Earlier, the state news agency ANP said soldiers had been travelling in one of the buses and that an investigation had already begun to find the cause of the accident.

Road accidents have become a regular occurrence on the roads of this vast Sahel country. According to the Nigerien Agency for Road Safety, more than 7,000 road accidents occurred in Niger in 2025, killing more than 1,200 people and seriously injuring more than 4,400. Excessive speed, drink-driving and the poor condition of roads and vehicles are considered the main causes.
