Jamaat-e-Islami will hold a nationwide public awareness programme to prevent dengue from October 4 to 10. Through the programme, the party’s secretary general, Mia Golam Parwar, has called on people to come forward to prevent the dengue fever that has spread widely across the country and to help raise awareness.
“The dengue situation across the country has become dire, with unwanted deaths occurring. Only with public awareness and cooperation can people at all levels be protected from this deadly mosquito-borne disease. So I call on the people, our organisation’s leaders and activists and people from all walks of life to play a united role in preventing dengue,” he said in a statement to the media on Thursday.
Through the public’s spontaneous participation and the regular work of party leaders and activists, the programme can succeed in protecting citizens from dengue, Parwar said, urging everyone to make it a success together.
Anyone, including children of any age, showing symptoms of dengue fever should see a doctor without delay and be admitted to hospital if necessary, he said. He urged citizens to destroy Aedes breeding sites, clean around their homes, and clear standing water from flower pots and their trays, old tyres, coconut shells, discarded buckets and anywhere rainwater collects.
This year 245 people have died of dengue and 79,620 have been admitted to hospital, with the worst situation in September, when 148 people died according to the health directorate, he said. “But instead of taking effective steps, the current government has only engaged in rhetoric, increasing the loss of citizens’ lives. We demand that the government improve the health sector and ensure healthcare for citizens instead of making big claims.”
With public awareness and united effort, a safe country and society can be ensured for citizens, and there is no alternative to collective effort, he said. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is determined to stand by the people to overcome this difficult situation.
