DSEX index falls more than 1.5 percent

The Dhaka Stock Exchange’s broad index, DSEX, fell more than 1.5 percent this past week. The exchange’s other indices also trended lower. Bangladesh’s other bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), likewise saw its index decline over the week.

Market analysis shows the DSE’s broad index, DSEX, fell 98 points from the previous week to close at 5,786 points, down from 5,884 points the week before. The blue-chip index, DS-30, fell 0.30 points over the week to 2,163 points, down from 2,193 points at the close of the previous week. The Shariah index, DSES, fell 21 points over the week to 1,156 points, down from 1,177 points at the close of the previous week.

A total of 384 companies, mutual funds and corporate bonds were traded on the DSE last week. Of these, 52 gained in price, 314 declined, and 18 remained unchanged. Twenty-seven saw no trading at all. Shares of BRAC Bank, Sharp Industries, Domineez, Islami Bank and LHBL played the biggest role in the index’s decline last week.

In sector-based trading, textile shares dominated the week. An analysis of trading patterns shows the textile sector led with 21.2 percent of total DSE turnover last week. The general insurance sector was second with 17.9 percent of turnover. The engineering sector was third with 9.6 percent of turnover. The pharmaceuticals and chemicals sector was fourth with 9.1 percent of turnover, and the banking sector was fifth with 7.1 percent of total turnover.

The jute sector saw the biggest negative return on the DSE last week, at 4.6 percent. This was followed by negative returns of 4.5 percent in the paper sector, 4.4 percent in mutual funds, 3.5 percent in ceramics and 3.4 percent in textiles. The only sector with a positive return last week was services, at 0.2 percent.

On the CSE, the broad index, CASPI, fell nearly 2 percent over the week to 15,491 points, down from 15,803 points the week before. The CSCX index fell 2.05 percent over the week to 9,431 points, down from 9,628 points the week before.

About 310 million taka worth of shares and units were traded on the CSE last week. Of the 321 companies and mutual funds traded on the CSE during the week, 68 gained in price, 241 declined, and 12 remained unchanged.
