7 sentenced to death for gang rape of woman in Jamalpur

A court in Jamalpur has sentenced seven men to death and fined them Tk 1 lakh each for the gang rape of a woman in Bakshiganj upazila. One co-accused was acquitted after the charges against him could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt.

Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 in Jamalpur delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon (July 6).

The men sentenced to death are Md. Rashedur Rahman alias Pappu, 30; Md. Biju Mia, 36; Md. Badsha Mia, 35; Md. Jewel Mia, 35; Md. Ashraful Islam, 40; Josim; and Asmat. Md. Idris Ali was acquitted.

Public prosecutor Advocate Md. Fazlul Haq said the accused abducted a woman from the Nilkshiya area of Bakshiganj upazila on the night of May 25, 2025, took her to an abandoned house, and gang-raped her. The victim filed a case at Bakshiganj Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Seven of nine witnesses testified in court. After reviewing the testimonies, medical report, and other evidence, the tribunal found the charges proven beyond reasonable doubt against seven of the eight accused. The prosecution expressed satisfaction with the verdict.
