The Bangladesh government had no involvement in Barrister Zaima Rahman’s appointment as a legal officer in the office of Khalilur Rahman, president of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, said Mahdi Amin, the prime minister’s adviser on education and primary and mass education. Criticising various rumours spread in the country, he said she was appointed on her own merit after meeting all the professional requirements for the responsible UN post, and should be congratulated for it.
He was speaking at a press conference on the prime minister’s New York visit in the Karabi hall of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Wednesday afternoon.
“The Bangladesh government had not the slightest involvement in Zaima Rahman’s appointment process. Detailed information is available in the UN’s rules, regulations and procedures and the recruitment procedures under its executive office,” Amin said.
“Another point is that the position she applied for on her own merit is a P-3 position, which requires at least five years’ experience. P-1, or Professional-1, needs minimal experience, P-2 at least two years, and P-3 five years of professional experience. There are further levels, P-4, P-5 and so on,” the adviser said.
On the contrary, she is doing nothing like the past practice of using family influence at the UN for political reasons, Amin said.
