The general secretary (GS) of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) reminisced about his life in an emotional Facebook post after vacating his dormitory seat at the end of his master’s examinations.

He shared the news in a post on his personal Facebook profile on Monday. At the same time, he called for a culture of vacating dormitory seats in timely fashion once one’s student life ends. Expressing his feelings in the Facebook post, he said the university’s residential halls are a memorable chapter in every student’s life. In the post-pandemic period, he moved into Maulana Bhasani Hall, one of the university’s most scenic residences, and spent important times of his university life there, including study, sports and clubbing.

He said countless memories are bound up in every corner of the hall’s corridors, playing field, common room, mosque, canteen and reading room. He said he had also formed warm bonds with the hall’s students and staff, and even with the familiar cats around the hall grounds.

Reminiscing, he said it was from this hall that he most enjoyed Jahangirnagar University’s enchanting rains, the sunlit beauty of winter mornings and the sight of the Kalbaishakhi storms on summer afternoons. Every moment and the surroundings of the hall would remain for him a symbol of special beauty, he said.

Announcing his decision to vacate his seat after the end of his master’s examinations, he said: “Out of respect for the university’s rules, I am giving up my hall seat. Everyone should prepare to leave the hall as their student life nears its end.”

He also said responsible behavior by students would help ease the housing crisis for newcomers and would help ensure a healthy and orderly academic environment free of the “gono room” and “guest room” culture at the university.

According to people connected with the university, if a culture of regularly handing over seats and vacating halls on time takes hold in the residential halls, the housing problems of new students will ease considerably, and a more humane and student-friendly environment will be established on campus.
