A devastating flood struck the Nepal-Tibet border area without any early warning. A grief-stricken father and husband who survived has given a harrowing account of losing his family before his own eyes. He said officials told him a river embankment on the Tibet border had burst and that they needed to move to higher ground immediately — but before he could fully grasp what was happening, the surging water swept away his wife and son in an instant.

The account was reported by NDTV Online. The cloth trader, from Trishuli Bazar in Nuwakot, said there had been no rainfall in the area that day. Everyone was going about their daily routines when the administration’s warning came. But there was not enough time after the warning to reach safe shelter.

Within seconds of the warning reaching them, a massive wave of mud and water crashed through. Many ran for their lives, but the businessman’s wife and young son were swept away in an instant by the powerful surge. They have not yet been found.

According to witnesses, the devastating flood was caused by a glacial collapse that blocked water in a tributary of the Bhote Koshi River. Rajendra Dhungana, chief customs officer of Rasuwa district, said he saw water approaching like a wave nearly 100 meters high, which swept away an entire market in moments.

Wide areas across Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts in Nepal now lie buried under several meters of mud and silt. Hundreds of homes, shops and the dreams of thousands of people have vanished before their eyes. Like the businessman, frozen by grief over losing loved ones, hundreds of others now stand gazing at the piles of mud, counting the hours as they wait for missing relatives.
