At least 38 people have died in China from continuous heavy rain, severe flooding and landslides across various regions caused by Typhoon Mazasak.
According to official data, floods caused by the typhoon killed at least six people in the southern Guangxi region, while roughly 130,000 people were moved to safe shelters.
Chinese state media said at least 40 rivers and waterways in Guangxi overflowed past warning levels, causing extensive damage to about 13,000 acres of farmland.
Footage released by state broadcaster CCTV showed a concrete reservoir dam breaking, releasing water in a powerful surge. Rescue workers in life jackets were seen working to rescue stranded residents using rubber boats.
China’s central government has sent additional relief supplies, food, raincoats and rubber boats to the affected areas to address the disaster.
China’s flood control authorities have kept the second-highest level emergency alert in effect for Guangxi. Water Resources Minister Li Guoying said river levels at the Wuzhou hydrological station could rise more than six meters above the warning level. The safety of reservoirs and dams now faces a major test amid continuous rain and high water flow.
Meanwhile, in the central province of Hubei, thunderstorms and high-speed winds killed 11 more people and injured 331, with one person missing. About 4,800 homes were damaged and 22 buildings collapsed entirely.
In the northwestern province of Gansu, the landslide death toll has risen to 21. A landslide buried 33 people in Renchang village of Dangchang county on Tuesday morning.
After the rescue operation concluded, local authorities confirmed 21 deaths. The cause of the landslide is under investigation, and the government has allocated 30 million yuan for reconstruction.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has instructed rescue forces to make an all-out effort to carry out emergency relief and rescue operations.
